Start with the basics
Geography studies places and their relationships. Environmental study considers how living things and their surroundings affect one another.
A map uses 1 centimetre to represent 2 kilometres. Two places are 3 centimetres apart on the map. Find the represented distance.
Remember: Check the scale and distinguish straight-line distance from route distance.
Log in to save highlights and answer practice questions. Select text in a note, then choose a highlight colour. On mobile, touch and hold to select. Choose Save highlights or Save changes to save to your account. You’ll be prompted before leaving unsaved study changes.
Organise static facts by theme and current events by date and source. Revise institutions and the meaning of economic indicators.
Balance static facts with a dated current-affairs log. Verify volatile facts close to the exam; do not treat an old list as current.
Explain the idea in your own words before opening the answer. Then apply it to the example.
Explain the main rule in physical geography, then apply it to a small example. State the assumption that makes your reasoning valid.
Review the noteUnderstand processes such as erosion, rainfall, winds and tectonic movement before memorising locations.
Worked example: Moist air rising over a mountain cools and may release rain on the windward side. Descending air on the other side can create a rain-shadow region.
Explain the main rule in indian and world geography, then apply it to a small example. State the assumption that makes your reasoning valid.
Review the noteUse maps to connect places, borders, rivers and resources. Distinguish political boundaries from physical features.
Worked example: A river basin can cross state and national borders. When revising it, trace source, major tributaries and outlet instead of assuming it belongs to only one region.
Explain the main rule in environment, then apply it to a small example. State the assumption that makes your reasoning valid.
Review the noteAn ecosystem includes organisms and their physical surroundings. Separate weather from climate, and mitigation from adaptation.
Worked example: Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions is mitigation. Building flood-resilient infrastructure is adaptation. A policy can do both, but the terms describe different objectives.
BEGINNER
Each 1 cm interval represents 2 km; a road route can be longer.
Represented distance = map length × distance per map unit
