CAT is India's most competitive MBA entrance exam. But it's also the most predictable — the syllabus is fixed, the pattern has been stable for 4+ years, and a smart 6-month preparation plan is all you need to crack it. This guide gives you exactly that.

Understanding CAT 2026 Exam Pattern

Before planning preparation, you must know exactly what you're preparing for. CAT 2026 will be a 2-hour computer-based test with 3 sections:

  • VARC (Verbal Ability & RC) — 24 questions, 40 minutes
  • DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) — 20 questions, 40 minutes
  • QA (Quantitative Aptitude) — 22 questions, 40 minutes
  • Marking: +3 correct, −1 wrong MCQ, 0 for TITA (non-MCQ)

The 6-Month CAT Study Plan

Months 1–2: Foundation Phase

This phase is about building conceptual clarity — not speed. Take one baseline mock in Week 1 to understand where you stand. Then tackle topics methodically:

  • QA: Start with Arithmetic (Percentages, Ratios, P&L, TSD). Cover 1 topic per week.
  • VARC: Read 1 long article daily. Practice 5 para jumbles per day.
  • DILR: Solve 1 DI and 1 LR set daily. Focus on clean representation.

Months 3–4: Practice Phase

Now apply what you've learnt under time pressure. Take sectional tests daily and begin full mocks every 2 weeks.

  • 20 QA questions daily under 40-minute timer
  • 2 RC passages daily — aim for 90%+ accuracy
  • 3–4 DILR sets daily — practice set selection
  • 1 full-length mock every 2 weeks with 3-hour analysis session

Months 5–6: Mock Phase

This is where your CAT score gets built. Two full mocks per week, with equal time spent on analysis.

  • 2 full-length CAT mocks per week
  • Track percentile trends — you should see improvement every 4 mocks
  • Identify and revisit the 3–4 topics where you consistently lose marks
  • Solve previous year CAT papers (2019–2024) in the final 3 weeks

CAT Preparation for Working Professionals

If you have a job, 6 months is still enough — but discipline is non-negotiable. Recommended weekly time: 15–18 hours.

  • Weekdays: 1.5–2 hours daily. Focused topic study or 20 practice questions.
  • Weekends: 4–5 hours per day. Take full mocks on weekends and analyse them.
  • Commute time: Read one quality article (RC practice) during your commute.

How Many Mocks Are Enough for CAT?

Aim for 25–30 full-length mocks before the exam. But quantity matters less than quality of analysis. After every mock, spend 2–3 hours reviewing every question you got wrong and every question you guessed correctly. This analysis is where the real learning happens.
